Federal Government plans to limit the rights of consumers to take legal action against companies for misleading and deceptive conduct could damage the economy and undermine long-standing legal rights, the new deputy chairwoman of the nation's consumer watchdog said last night. Louise Sylvan, who took up the deputy's post at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission a month ago, said changes to the Trade Practices Act that would circumvent existing legal rights were problematic.
